Calisthenics teams are based on the age of the child. If there are multiple teams for an age grouping, teams are placed at the discretion of our coaches.
Calisthenics Association of South Australia (CASA) State Champion- ships are held annually at the Royalty Theatre, 65 Angas Street, Adelaide in August for competitive Tinies teams & all Sub-Junior, Junior, Intermediate, Seniors & Masters teams. Non-competitive Tinies perform a demonstration along with other clubs from around the state in July.
Preliminary competitions are held in May/June and are optional for all teams under the coaches discretion.
Each item focuses on developing different physical, technical, and performance skills. Items are performed to music and are assessed on technique, synchronization, musical interpretation, deportment, and overall presentation.

Core (Compulsory) Items
These items form the foundation of calisthenics and are performed by most age groups each season:
March (Figure March)
March is a synchronized marching routine where teams move through set floor patterns. It develops discipline, timing, spatial awareness, posture, and teamwork, with emphasis on uniform movement and precise formations.
Free Exercises
Free Exercises combine strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination without the use of apparatus. Movements may include kicks, balances, turns, floor work, and controlled transitions, showcasing physical conditioning and body control.
Rods
Rods involve the manipulation of a lightweight rod while performing coordinated movements. This item develops hand–eye coordination, precision, rhythm, and control, requiring athletes to move in unison while handling apparatus safely and accurately.
Club Swinging
Using wooden clubs, this item focuses on rhythmic swinging patterns, timing, and motor control. Club swinging enhances coordination, upper-body strength, and concentration, with strong emphasis on uniformity across the team.
Aesthetic / Rhythmical Aesthetic
Aesthetic items are ballet-influenced and expressive, focusing on grace, line, posture, musical interpretation, and emotional expression. Movements are flowing and controlled, highlighting poise and performance quality rather than strength alone.
Fancy / Specialty Items
These items add variety and theatrical elements to calisthenics and may change from year to year depending on competition rules:
Song & Dance / Action Song
Combines singing with choreographed movement. It develops breath control, confidence, projection, and expressive performance, particularly for younger competitors.
Rhythmic Interpretation
A dance-focused item that tells a story or interprets music through expressive movement, often using dramatic dynamics and emotional range.
Folk or Character Dance
Based on cultural or character-driven themes, this item emphasises storytelling, style, and characterisation, often supported by themed costumes and music.
Calisthenic Revue / Stage Presentation
A theatrical item that may combine props, storytelling, and multiple movement styles. It highlights creativity, stagecraft, and team cohesion.
